Signal boxes have a real character to them — they're one of those lineside structures that, when done well, instantly root a layout in a specific time and place. The Ratio 536 Midland Signal Box does exactly that.
It's modelled on the Midland Railway standard 4d box, with the characteristic hipped roof that defined this type right through to the end of mechanical signalling. The specific prototype is the box at Swadlincote Junction, Leicestershire — a proper historical anchor if you're aiming for period accuracy on a Midland-themed layout. It's also very similar to those seen at Bardon and Coalville in Leicestershire too.
What's in the Box
Parts come pre-coloured, which is a time-saver if you want to get something on the layout without a full painting session first. That said, painting the model in your favourite acrylics will eliminate any "plastic-ness".
- Pre-coloured plastic parts
- Suitable for all 1:76 scale model railway layouts
- Footprint of 130mm x 50mm — compact enough to fit most platform or lineside settings
Glue is required and is not included — something worth noting before you sit down for a build session. For this, we recommend Deluxe Materials Precision Plastic Glue
Adding Realism
If you want to take it further, the Ratio Signal Box Interior kit (553) is designed to complement this model — worth considering if your box is going to be a focal point on the layout, or you're a modeller that loves to add internal detail. Plus, a bit of lighting behind those windows makes a surprising difference (lighting not included)
For weathering, the Pecoscene Weathering Powder range (PS-360 to PS-365) works well here, as do the Humbrol Weathering Powders. A light dusting of grime around the roofline and window frames goes a long way towards making it look like it's been standing at the end of a platform for forty years.
A Timeless Design
Ratio has been producing quality plastic kits since 1950, and this is the kind of model that reflects that heritage — reliable, historically grounded, and well thought out. The Midland 4d box design was widespread across the network, which means this kit works across a broad range of layout themes and periods without looking out of place.
Whether you're building a detailed Midland Railway scene or simply need a well-proportioned signal box for a general OO layout, the 536 is definitely a good choice.
