Although quite a rare prototype in the UK, a triangular junction allows entire trains to reverse their direction. Probably the best known example in Cornwall was the Tolcarne Junction, just outside Newquay.
This track plan isn't quite a triangle, as the two arms of the triangle don't actually meet. Essentially the layout is two circles of track, joined together to also give a longer oval. To enable the locos to be turned, the use of an off-stage PECO SL-43 Loco lift is suggested.
The layout has an island platform station, accessed via a subway, and a small goods yard. There are hidden sidings to allow a change of rolling stock.
Buildings Suggestions
The scenery for this layout is on three levels. Most importantly, the track bed is actually flat, so there are no inclines to worry about. In the front left corner the road dips below the track via an underbridge. Conversely, in the right rear corner, the road has continued and now goes over the railway. As well as the island platform building, the various fields and spaces and be filled with as few, or as many, houses, barns, sheds and outbuildings as you wish.
