In a radical departure from the normal rectangular baseboard, this console design allows the operator to sit within the layout's U shape. The design shows a heavy industrial scene, but this would work equally as well as a small fishing or commercial harbour, with the baseboard edge being the quayside.
With scenery set on two levels, this will call for some structural engineering to create a stable baseboard
The plan uses several hidden sidings to increase the variety of rolling stock, which can then be brought out into view and shunted around the various short sidings. There is even the option to have a shuttle passenger service passing through the scene, if desired.
Buildings Suggestions
For the industrial scene shown, small workshops (eg KX094-OO Stoney's Workshops) and retaining walls would be needed on the lower level, whereas the upper level could either be filled with warehouses and factories (eg KX049-OO G.T.C. Engineering Works), or be more urban with streets of shops and houses.
For a harbourside layout, smaller warehouses and workshops (eg KX087-OO Coach House) could be placed around the track, and the upper part of the town could be small cottages and sheds, maybe with the occasional larger house (eg KX065 Poplar Farmhouse) for contrast.
