A quick and easy way to install realistic concrete hardstanding on your oo scale model railway layout. Perfect for maintenance depots, engine sheds, distribution depots and more. This kit comprises of a series of 2mm thick, laser cut MDF strips designed to sit between and over the sleepers on standard Hornby & Peco track, giving the appearance of the rails being embedded into the concrete. Also included are two A4 sheets of realistic, weathered concrete hardstanding texture sheets, with expansion gap markings etc to cover the MDF strips with.

A single kit contains enough parts to build hardstanding for a 2 lane engine shed or traction maintenance depot with a width of up to 46mm either side of the outer tracks for the 67mm version. Dimensions for Peco Streamlined version to be confirmed.

Recommended glue: Deluxe Materials DLAD-21 Super Phatic or Evo-Stick Wood Glue for gluing MDF strips. Spraymount, UHU or Pritt Stick for gluing the texture sheets to the MDF.

Derailing issue

Good kit easy to put together and cut if needed to fit in a smaller space with a nice sharp Stanley knife if needed however once I installed it for some reason the kit is bought the outer strips seem to sit proud of the rail so my loco derails only thing I can think it might be is the wood sitting on the chairs of the sleepers

Best hardstanding kits…

The SMS Hardstanding kits are the best, all kits are cut with precision to various widths to fit between the tracks on layouts. Even if the sections are to wide they can easily be trimmed or cut down to fit a shaped if needed to fit in to and around points/switches. The section strips for the scale 4’ can even be shaped to fit a curve but only a slight curve as I have found recently while re- modelling a section on my own layout.

MDF strips too thick

I did find that the MDF strips were too thick and I had to sand the top layer to half its thickness to make sure they did not foul the track. I am using Peco 100 flexirail woode sleepers 00 gauge.

Straightforward to use.

Well thought out, and easy to 'install', following the simple instructions. Have tried other methods in the past, but this gives by far the best results. I used double sided tape to apply the concrete covering, and will be applying some additional weathering to blend it all in. Simply the best way to achieve a hard standing.

This product is really good for hard standing for your engine sheds or like I have used it for my container yard. Very easy to assemble with the option of using the concrete paper sheets or you can paint it yourself. I think I’ve bought 6 packs of these. That’s how much I like the product.
