Based on a design by Neil Ripley, this layout is inspired by the Wisbech and Upwell Tramway, used by Rev. Awdry's "Thomas the Tank Engine" stories. The simple trackplan allows generous space around the outside for a play area, and a central area for more detailed scenic treatment, away from little hands.
The plan is a circle with a pair of passing loops and a couple of sidings. This will allow three or four trains to be kept on the layout, so keeping interest levels high.
Buildings Suggestions
For the outer area, the scenery should be kept to a minimum to prevent accidental damage, although one or two robust houses will add play value. KX078-OO Percival Cottage or KX067 Terraced Cottage would be our suggestions.
In the central area, you could add a small village scene, as on the plan, with a row of terraced cottages (KX080-OO) and a couple of older barns or workshops (eg KX054-OO), or a complete farm scene. Alternatively, part, or all, of this area could be utilised as an industrial or factory environment, incorporating the sidings to transfer goods and materials.
