A versatile barn/workshop building suitable for farm, railway or industrial use. Inspired by a building in Mevagissey, Cornwall.

Suitable for both beginners and the more experienced modeller, this kit is cleverly designed - containing not one, not two, but THREE buildings in one! A barn/store, a workshop with double-width wooden doors, and an open lean-to. The three buildings can be positioned separately or all together as one (as shown).

The kit contains interior and exterior wall wraps in our popular old stone texture - instantly transforming an ordinary wooden building into a property rich with character and history. The kit also includes slate roofing strips, corrugated iron roofing wraps, laser-cut windows and doors with engraved planks, hinges and locks. The small window is prototypically boarded up and the upper window can also be half-glazed if required.

Doors and window frames require painting before the kit is assembled which can be done with solvent or acrylic based paints. We used a Plastikote Stone color for our test build which we then dry-brushed with burnt umber, white & slate grey artists acrylics to create a weathered wood look. 

There's also plenty of scope for customisation too... with the slates being applied in individual strips it's easy to build it in either pristine or derelict condition (or anywhere in between), plus the optional steps at the end of the building can be omitted to give the appearance of them being demolished at some point, or to allow passing carts, lorries or wagons to be loaded via the side door.

The windows and doors are slightly too big for the openings and the rafters are too big for the cut out in the walls

This is an absolutely stunning building and definitely a worthy addition to any model farm scene, the old weathered look to the finish of the models covering is excellent, I painted the doors, window and shutters in acrylic burnt umber before fitting into the model this gave a really good wooden looking finish to them, dry brushed a fine antique white for the finished look . Another very enjoyable model to build and excellent quality.

The barn was very easy to construct and very sturdy. I didn't detail the interior as it would be very difficult to see in situ. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. The building is made from thick MDF and therefore easy to keep it square, just a quick check with a small engineers metal square as the glue set was all that was needed. The pictures show the barn placed in position, I need to blend the grass etc. around the building when I am completely happy with the position in the scene. This is my first kit from Scale Model Scenery, I shall buy more. I also model in 7mm scale, any thoughts on producing items for this scale?

It was easy to make, just have to take your time when cutting out the stone paper. I like the stone effect on the building, very realistic . Only thing I did was to add the paint on the doors to give more well used, old derelict feeling.

Excellent level of detail, and an enjoyable build

This kit went together well. I didn't use the stone wrap provided, as I needed the barn to blend in with an existing building, but with care even a relatively hamfisted modeller like me could successfully give the barn a credible appearance. I realise that the prototype is a stone-built rural structure but as the shape of the building is well suited to industrial use, perhaps a choice of stone and brick wraps (as in other SMS products) might be popular? I think that the standard of SMS construction guides has greatly improved over the last couple of years, and as a reluctant painter I found that the advice on the colours used for the woodwork was very useful (and successful).
